Mike Baur is currently the Co-Founder and Executive chairman of the Swiss Startup Group AG in Freienbach, SZ. He founded this group in order to, “Inspire and impact people in Switzerland to start their own startup ideas.” The group was founded along with Max Meister and Oliver Walzer. They are working to help early stage startups in Switzerland bridge the gap between the old economy and the new economy. The Swiss economy had been based on banking before the financial crises. Lower interest rates and pinched profits for banks, have led many of them to cost cutting, employing significantly less of the Swiss population; this is referred to by Mike as ‘big cat’ syndrome. One of Mike’s goals is to help the economy along to change from a very risk averse one to one with more opportunities. Mike’s experience in banking made him well acquainted with many successful entrepreneurs, giving him a great network for problem solving and financial assistance.
His career started as a commercial apprentice at UBS and worked his way up to upper management. Mike then went to Clariden Leu, a prominent Swiss bank, as a wealth manager. Throughout his career he always accelerated beyond the pack, an adviser in his 20s to board executive in his 30s. He left banking in 2014 after 20 years, impassioned to start his own business and give back and help entrepreneurs get their ideas off the ground. He is an avid sports fan and local sports supporter. He has commented that the similarities between top spots professionals and his own startup team fascinates him.
The Swiss Startup Group specializes in startup acceleration, startup DNA, startup acceleration and startup investments. The group has helped 17 very diverse companies. Everything from high tech online learning, wealth management apps and mountaineering. they have helped more companies along the way. but are not currently a part of the groups investment portfolio. Mike Baur gives talks at Universities and other venues about how ot become an entrepreneur. He talks of the three main ideas that greatly helped in his success. They are:
- In business, you have to be motivated and fast to be successful.
- Adaptability is a quality of many successful entrepreneurs.
- Sometimes there will be setbacks, but you have to keep pressing forward to make big things happen.
